Ags Win!

They finally did it. After losing 8 straight games to their nemisis in Austin the Aggie Baseball team finally pulled out a win and it couldn't have come at a better time. After dropping 6 straight games to end the season they now have a backdoor chance at getting into the Big 12 championship game. The big play of the game was when the Ags loaded the bases and catcher Craig Stinson deposited the ball over the fence for a grand Slam. Aggie Pitcher Kirkland Rivers ate up important innings going 6 2/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 7 hits. Now if the Ags beat KSU on Saturday and Texas beats Nebraska the Ags will win their pool and face the winner of the other pool for the Big 12 championship. This could be huge in deciding if they host a regional.

Next Game: 10 am (5)Ags vs (8) Wildcats

All three games will be played in Aggieland and carried on ESPN or ESPN2. Since I'm sure no one has clue about what the Gators will bring I did some research. The bigget difference in the stats is the fact that Florida has played 69 games to A&M's 55. However the ags have a better batting average and have scored more runs on the season. It looks like it could be a pitching duel as both teams have a sub 1.40 ERA. Their pitching was dominant in the regional round as they didn't allow a single run in the tourney. They were also the team that knocked out tu 3-0.

Also being Florida you'd think they'd have a few girls of the hot variety so I took it upon myself to double check for everyone and what did I find? They stole one out of our own backyard! Lacey Howard is from League City, TX and plays outfield for the gators. She's the only Texan on the team. I'm highly dissapointed that our coaching staff wasn't able to keep her at home. Coach Evans needs to look at the players Coach G brought in with the Garey sisters and take notes!

Another weird not is that the Florida coaching staff are all grads of Oklahoma... I just find it interesting that Stoops left Florida for Oklahoma and then Florida has ou coaches. I guess it's not as big a deal as having Stoops but whatevah. Anyways here's hoping that our girls come in focused and put the first two games away so we're not sweatin' it at the end.

They left 13 men on base and were only 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position. The Ags have no lost 5 straight games and can probably kiss away their chances of hosting a regional. Many people are pointing to Stouffer striking out after being up in a count 3-0 and the bases loaded with 2 outs late in the game down one but they shouldn't have ever been in that situation. They squandered opportunities from the beginning and the pitchers didn't help either after giving up a run on two balks. Childress used Ehlert, Uekert, and Starling in the game and in his postgame audio said Rivers would get the start today against Texas. He said that unless there was a late chance for a win don't expect to see Nicholson. So now we'll see if they can snap an 8 game losing streak to the horns when they play today at 4 pm. The horns won yesterday in a slugfest against KSU 19-10 but had to use their top reliever in the win. They'll probably be reluctant to run him out there again so maybe the ags can get into that bullpen.

Winning Co-Newcomers of the year were SS Brandon Hicks and Pitcher David Newman. First teamers were DH Luke Anders, utility man Blake Stouffer, and pitcher Kyle Nicholson. Second teamers were 2B Parker Dalton, and SS Brandon Hicks. And honorable mention were C Craig Stinson, OF Ben Feltner, and P David Newman.

This is a far better showing for the Aggies than in recent years but they do still have an arguement that Kyle Nicholson should've been the pitcher of the year instead of longhorn Adrian Alaniz. Alaniz had a 2.75 conference ERA with 49 strikeouts. Aggie super stud Kyle Nicholson had a 2.03 ERA in conference with 50 strikeouts and 2 CG and a 7-0 record in conference. Over the entire season Nicholson had 1.91 ERA with 91 strikeouts! I don't understand how he didn't win the award except for an obvious burnt orange media conspiracy.

Other outstanding individual performances by Ags were Blake Stouffer finishing second in the conference with 84 hits, second with 70 RBI's, and tied for forth with fellow Aggie Brandon Hicks with 18 doubles. Hicks also finished second in runs scored with 67, fourth in total bases with 135, and second to his speedy counterpart Ben Felther with 27 stolen bases. Feltner stole 30 of 32 bases to lead the conference.

The Aggies are back in the Big 12 tournament after failing to finish in the top 8 last season with the number 5 seed. Their first round opponent will be 4th seeded Nebraska. In the regular season matchup the Ags won 2 of the 3 game series losing the first 4-11 before rebounding to win 8-5 and 8-7. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the Childress said he'd be starting Kirkland Rivers in this game. Which tells me he's either saving Nicholson for revenge in the second game against Texas or he's going to save Nicholson all he can until regional play rolls around. And Kyle definitley deserves it after his blue collar like performance this season. A few wins would be nice and should solidify at least a host of the regional round at Olsen Field. We'll keep you updated on the Aggies performance as it plays out in Oklahoma City.

The Duke Blue Devils and the Final Four pretty much go hand and hand together the past few years however this time it's not basketball. The Duke lacrosse team, coming off a season in which their entire administration, campus, and community had turned their backs on them and forced them out of playing the season, has come back to advance to the Final Four of lacrosse in Baltimore. And to make it even better for the Dukies out there they did so by beating up on the Tar Heels from UNC. Let me reassure you that I HATE Duke. I hate their fans. I hate Coach Cantspellyourname. I hate the attention that their over-rated basketball team recieves. But I hate when people are given a raw deal by someone looking to benefit from someone elses prosperity even more. And that is exactly what Crystal Gail Mangum, an exotic dancer hired to perform at Duke lacrosse party, tried to do. She decided attempt to take advantage of the upper class social status probably assuming that their parents would rather pay her some money to shut up. And when they didn't DA (interpret as seen fit), Mike Nifong, was sitting there looking at the case that would surely win him his position back in an election year. In the end, after a year of having the three players reputations torn to pieces, what everyone knew was true was confirmed and all of the charges were dropped against the three Duke players.

Now the Duke team has come full circle. They lost their coach after he was forced into resignation but they brought in another top coach from Hofstra. They gained the number one seed in the national tournament. And now the find themselves on the road to Baltimore where they will try to finish off a truly historic season with a national championship. And hopefully when they take that trophy back to Durham they throw one hell of a big party and rub it in the face of all the faculty and staff that called them out for things that never occured.

And just so everyone remembers... Duke still sucks.

Stern Judgement?

It's just another development in what is turning out to be one of the most exciting NBA playoffs in years. It started with the reckless style of the Golden State Warriors chopping down the Western Conference Champs and playoff favorite Dallas Mavericks. It's continued with Derek Fisher flying across the country from New York City where his young daughter was having life altering surgery and giving his team a charge to victory. And now the country is fixated on the Suns vs Spurs series where Amare Stoudemire has called out Bruce Bowen (who hasn't) and the Spurs for being dirty. And just like he always seems to do "Big Shot" Rob, Robert Horry, connected on a shot that will change the entire playoffs. Only this time it didn't come from his right hand holding the pose as he connected with the shot but it came from his left forearm as he leveled Phoenix point guard and leader, Steve Nash, into the scorers table. As a result Horry will miss both game 5 and 6, and the Suns will lose key players Boris Diaw and Amare Stoudemire because in the words of NBA Executive Vice President Stu Jackson "they left the immediate vicinity of the bench".

I know that the NBA were pretty much screwed whatever decision they made on this situation but they did it to themselves. They've gone with a black and white system of judgement. Earlier in the year if anyone questioned a call they were immediately given a technical. Forget the fact that the refs are human and therefore subject to error and the player might have the right to question a call. And in this case it's a clear cut rule that if a player leaves the bench during an altercation they are immediately subject to a one game suspension. But shouldn't they be looking at what the actions of said players that leave the bench? In this case you have the Suns team leader being taken out with an obvious cheap shot and Stoudemire and Diaw in a moment of intensity jumped off the bench and moved towards the action. Bear in mind that they never even got to the action and that the assistant coaches did their job in getting between the players and reminding them what the consequences of them leaving the bench meant. You can even see as Stoudemire moved back to the bench that he had no intent of doing anything and wanting to follow the rules and get back to his seat. So basically these guys are being punished for doing what they are coached to do from day one. Be a team. Apparently the NBA thinks that the players are robots and that when they are on the bench they have a swith that someone flips that turns off all intensity and emotion. But it doesn't work like that Mr. Stern. Teammates are like a family and if you don't have enough in the guts to stand up when someone takes out your brother then you're not much of a person. The actions of these players didn't do anything to effect what happened on the court or harm anyone. The rule was designed to protect the players on the court from recieving a cheap shot from a player off the bench. So enforce it that way.

The Real NBA Finals Commercials.

You've all seen them. Dirk and McGrady doing the short little commercials where they're acting like little kids that are counting down the last 10 seconds of the game with them pulling out a win. But as it turns out those were not the first takes and we here at Ag Sports Daily came across the first takes of these commercials. It seems that the director told the players to just go with it like they normally would in a game and this is what happened.

Dirk's commercial:
Director: NBA playoffs commercial take one annnnnnnnnnddd ACTION!
Dirk:(thick german accent)Da Mavs down one 10 seconds on the clock... Nowitzki tries to hide in a corner. Harris finds him anyways. Dirk passes to Terry but Terry passes back. Dirk freaks and makes an awkward move. 3..2.. Dirk leans in and flails around as he kicks his leg out as he shoots a fall away shot over a guy he's much bigger than... the shot clangs no foul... the mavs lose... (tears form)... why? Why do they look to me? I hate it. I hate it.... walks to corner sulking.
Director:Let's try something a little different.

T-mac's commercial:
Director:NBA playoffs with T-mac take one anddddddd ACTION!
T-Mac:96 feet to the win with the Rockets down one. Macgrady takes the in bounds with 10 seconds left... The walls are closing in... Macgrady makes a behind the back crossover move. Yao is wide open and a foot taller than everyone else. Macgrady makes another spin move there's no one between him and the basket. He makes a move 3 seconds left... He's going down the lane... He grabs his throat! It seems that he's choking...Macgrady is on the ground gasping for breath. He has choked as time runs out!

Needless to say the NBA didn't find these commercials to be very uplifting for the league and decided that they should go with a slightly different angle.
Howdy from Cajun Country

Well I've traveled into the heart of Cajun country this weekend to see my friends that have moved out here to work at LSU. I've learned a couple of interesting things out here. First, I learned how to eat a crawfish with one hand nearly doubling my crawfish intake per minute time. And second, LSU football tickets are freakin cheap! Some of my friends students came over and we watched the De La Hoya v Mayweather fight (which turned out to kinda suck)and we got to talking college football. These guys were pretty knowledgeable and one had been to the '04 ou game and said that was a game atmosphere he had never seen. So they quickly earned my respect. So we got to talking and I told them how I'd always wanted to make a big time SEC game and I asked how hard it was to get a ticket. To my surprise they said it was relatively easy and I could get a good ticket for $70. I was shocked. I could go to a big time game in the SEC to watch a team that is just 3 years removed from winning a national championship for $70 but to watch my Aggies that hadn't won a championship since 1939 I'd be paying closer to $90. And then to my surprise they told me that a student ticket was less than $20 and that when they won the national championship they paid $7 A TICKET! This is just rediculous. I don't want to hear Bill Byrne ever talk about how higher ticket prices are just part of the cost of "Building Champions". The LSU Tigers have been champions and they did it with ticket prices that allowed their faithful to be there at the game without having to dip into savings. While I'm impressed with the steps that the athletic department has made in the past 5 years I still wonder why is it taking so much from the fans? I know that Aggies around the country will do anything to support their bretheren but I just feel that Byrne and the rest of the University administration is taking too much of an advantage of this. Bring back the family friendly atmosphere Mr. Bryne. What would you rather have? A stadium 80-90% full at a higher ticket price that maximizes profit or a stadium that is filled to the brim with a slightly lower profit but a larger home field advantage that pushes the team over the top and increases licensing fees from marketing as aggie gear is coveted by all around the country? Drop the prices and they will come.

It's Draft Day!

Well the most exciting day in Pro Football is here. It's draft day baby. Will we get to see some last minute trades? Did the Minnesota Vikings hire someone that can tell time? Will the Detroit Lions take another WR in the first round? All of these things will unfold today. I think the thing I'm looking forward to most today is what Al Davis will say after they make their pick. The guy is like the crazy old grandpa that everyone is embarrassed of but he's also the grandpa with all the money and no one is going to stand up to him. So for all we know he might be drafting a center to start the draft off and then comment how he saw his grandpa play in the 1942 Pac 10 championship and how ferocious he was and he just knew he had to have him. If I was Jamarcus Russell I'd be honored to go first but I'd be scared to death to go to that damn place. A few notes coming out of the pre-draft stuff right now is the Raiders are definitely going Jamarcus Russell unless they move Randy Moss. The Raiders turned down a deal to move Moss to the Patriots but you can't be too picky about a guy that you don't want and he doesn't want to be there. Also the Lions are going to take Johnson and the Browns Joe Thomas who chose to go fishing rather than attend the draft. That pushes pretty boy and junior politician Brady Quinn further down the line. I guess let's just sit back and see what happens. Happy Draft Day Everyone!

Dave South makes Historic Calls

Tonight I was driving in from a long day at work and flipped it over to 1620 AM to see how the Ags were doing. And they beat the crap out of the Baylor Bears 12-7... interesting score huh? Anyways, the thing that stood out to me the most and pretty much stands out to everyone is Dave South calling the game. He's been the "voice of the Aggies" for who knows how long but it's been way too long. The A&M athletic department is working it's butt off to be one of the best in the nation but this fool will hold us back. After the big Louisville win in Kentucky "The Pulse" with Doug Gottlieb on ESPN radio played some of his calls on national radio and it was embarrasing. I had to hope that everyone in the country thought he was a Louisville announcer. So back to what started this rant. One of his calls was on a play with runners on first and second with two outs. The batter hit a shot down the line and it went sort of like this.
[Dave South]And ________ hits a grounder towards third and ________ can't get there it's down the line in the outfield and one run will score and two runs will score. Says something else... wait did he? THEY THREW HIM OUT AT HOME! ONLY ONE RUN SCORES! FELTNER THREW HIM OUT ON A ONE HOPPER! Actually Feltner was cut off by Hicks and he thew out the runner.
Come on Dave is it that hard to follow the action and report it as it happens or were you trying to figure out when you'd fit in your next Slovacek Sausage spot?
So this got me to thinking... what would it be like if Dave made a call of some of the most memorable sports moments in history.

[Dallas vs Pittsburgh 1979 Superbowl]
Rocket Roger under center looking down the line. Takes the snap.... looking, looking, loooking... wide open in the endzone CAUGHT! and dropped. Billy Joe Dupree was wide open in the endzone and it went in and out of his hands... Who? Jackie who? Jackie Smith? That was Jackie? Well I stand corrected that was Jackie Smith who took his concentration off the ball and dropped it. One thing I can tell you folks is that you'll never drop a hot sausage link from Slovacek Sausage out of Snook, TX.

[Game 6 2003 NLCS]
And that's how I got the nickname Dave "goin down" South... so back to the game. Luis Castillo at the plate and Kenny Lofton on second. I mean Juan "pistol" Pierre, the old Double P or P.P. Prior is pitching a beauty with only 3 hits given up in the game. Prior has a great future if he can just stay healthy and he would stay healthy if he works out at the super slow zone. My buddy Turbeyville works out at the super slow zone and that means it's gotta work. So looks like some commotion in the crowd and Castillo fouls it off into the left field seats. And Alou looks like he's mad about something. I don't really know why the ball was clearly foul. So back to the action... well the people in the stands seem to be angry about something. Well who knows...and a wild pitch from Prior (oblivous to what happened).

These are just a couple of examples I thought of but there will be more later including other professions for Dave. But until then make the most out of supporting the Ags and listening to Dave by playing the Dave South Drinking Game.

Showdown Rundown

Aggie Athletics is really starting to come around an not in just one sport either. The Aggies are closer now than they've ever been to winning the State Farm Lonstar Showdown since it began. Aggie ace, Amanda Scarborough, pitched a three hit shutout with 7 strikeouts and helped her own cause with an RBI in the third. Scarborough was dominant over almost the entire lineup giving up two hits to one player, Kacie Gaskin. With the win the Lady Aggies brought the score of the Lonstar Showdown 7.5 pts for the Ags and 8.5 pts for the sips. The only events left in the showdown are Mens and Womens Outdoor Track & Field Championships from May 11th to the 13th and the season ending baseball series with 1 game in College Station and 2 in Austin. The Lady Aggies track team won the indoor track championships and the longhorn men won their championships. If that holds true then that would leave the Aggies a point behind going into the baseball series where the team that wins 2 of 3 games. The biggest problem is that in that scenario the best we could do is tie the sips and based on tie breakers they would actually win the showdown. So let's hope that our guys can pull it out and win this dang thing. Come on Ags lets pull this out.

Say It Ain't So Joe

It all started at about 3:00 pm when I saw this post, "Anyone hearing anything about JJ possibly leaving early? " on a members only aggie forum. It was no big deal there have been rumors or questions if he'd head to the NBA all year long and nothing had happened yet. Then about an hour later Chip Howard on KZNE 1150 nonchalantly says "Joseph Jones has declared for the NBA draft but will not hire an agent." And that was all that he said. This made me a little more nervous because weird things have happened this season. And then I got the email update for the Battalion about Jones declaring. At first I was confused and kind of mad that the emotional leader and most experienced big man we have was considering leaving. But then I composed myself and thought things out.

First things first, he's not gone he's just testing the waters. And who could blame him. He's on course to graduate soon and that is the most important thing to his mom which means it's the most important thing to Joe. Big men are a commodity in the NBA and if he can impress scouts with his workout and hit a big payday who could blame him for going? If it were to happen then college would've done what it's supposed to do for each and every one of us that go to college... Go to school, work hard, make friends, have fun, and find a great job and provide for your family. No one else would be expected to finish school and then just hang around for another year to make it a better time for everyone else. So I've decided as much as I would love for Joe to stay I'm not going to be mad if he does leave because that'll mean it's just another successful story of another Aggie going out and making something out of himself. So good luck to you Joe and if you decide you need to come back and punish the Big 12 for another year and teach DeAndre a thing or two that'll be cool too.

Add Another one to the Schedule

After losing a game in the Texas Tech series to a bone chilling cold front in Lubbock the Aggie Athletic Department has replaced that game with McNeese State on May 15 at 6:30 pm. The announcement was just given by Louie Belina on KZNE 1150 here in College Station. After two quick outs on a strike out and a caught stealing the Ags started a little 2 out rally with a double from Stouffer and then a double from Colligan and then another double from Luke Anders scoring 2 early runs to to take the early lead. Stinson the flied out to end the inning leavingi Anders stranded at second. In the second inning the Aggies kept the pressure on with their amazing team speed after getting runners on first and second Ben Feltner hit a two out grounder to second base and his speed forced a bad throw to first scoring Darby Brown. And the Ags added another run in the sixth when Luke Anders scored off of a Dalton bunt. Nicholson started strong and kept it there allowing no runs on 4 hits through eight innings. It was the ninth inning when thing started to get hairy. Nicholson gave up a single followed by a triple making the game 4-1. Then Blake Stouffer committed his third error of the game allowing Rebel Riddling to get on base and third baseman Mangini to score. Nicholson then gave up another single followed by a long fly ball to right field and Brodie Green who came up throwing and was able to gun Riddling at home preserving the 2 run lead. It was then that Childress decided he had seen enough and pulled Nicholson for relief pitcher Kyle Thebeau. Thebeau finished the game off with a strikeout and a long fly ball to CF Colligan.

These Aggies showed everything that they are tonight. They are a fast team with the ability to really press the opposing pitcher and score at any time. They're not afraid to run with 3 stolen bases tonight but at the same time they're not a great fielding team which was evident by Stouffer's three errors. And they have an ace that can carry them a long ways in Nicholson. Only time will tell but things are looking good for the Aggies. Many people are predicting that if they can win this series and stay at the top of the Big 12 they have a good chance of hosting a regional and a super regional. That's a long ways from where we were last year but Childress has proved again that Byrne knows how to hire coaches and we'll see if he can pull some more of that magic out of the corn in Nebraska to carry us back to the College World Series and a championship.

I've moved!

This is the beginning of a new site.
